Jennifer Trijo: Between The Lines
Review by Anthea Hudson

I came to this event, which was part of the Adelaide Fringe, by chance. Someone who was sick offered me their ticket… so I thought a night out, why not? And I am immensely glad that I did!

Right from the start the venue- Jazz on the Park- set the stage perfectly. The atmosphere was cosy and there was a great vibe in the room even before the artist appeared. The band began playing… but the singer we’d come to see was not yet on stage. Then… hauntingly, from somewhere beyond… she began to sing. What a beautiful voice! And then Miss Jennifer Trijo made her way slowly from the backstage area and down to the side of the audience, pausing for a few moments as she sang, before making her way up onto the stage.

Miss Trijo looked enchanting in a dress that glowed with multiple colours and a masquerade mask that complimented the mystery she had created so far.

Throughout the evening Jennifer wove a tapestry of the stories behind the songs she sang- hence the name of the show Between The Lines.

I thoroughly enjoyed her beautiful storytelling style, not only in the background she spoke of, but in the way she sang and her whole ‘presence’ during the performance, which told a story of its own of a woman passionate about her craft and her desire to connect with her audience.

I loved her taste in music as it correlated so well with my own. Some of my favourites were her opening number Teardrop (Massive Attack), Every Breath You Take (Sting), Angel (Sarah McLachlan)… and as I remember the songs she sang I find myself wanting to include every number as a favourite, so that’s what I’m going to do! They were all amazing.

Here’s the rest:
Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Hotel California (The Eagles)
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (The Beatles)
Lightning Crashes (Live)
Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack)
Black Velvet (Allanah Miles)
In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell)
The Remedy (Jason Mraz)

Encore:
If I Ain’t Got You (Alicia Keys)- Solo by Jennifer
The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel)- Duet by Harry Balderstone and Lincoln Bennett

Jennifer was brilliantly supported by her band members who are obviously multi-talented, as instruments were swapped throughout the performance and solo vocal segments were taken on by several of them.

Harry Baulderstone – Keys, Bass, Guitar and Vocals
Lincoln Bennett- Saxophone, Drums, Vocals
Azriel Poskey-Miles – Cello, Vocals
Dennis Russell – Guitar, Trumpet
Jakub Gaudasinski – Drums, Bass

This was a magical evening which I’m sure has enhanced the lives of all who attended.  I certainly won’t forget it in a hurry and I urge you to take the opportunity to experience one of Jennifer’s events in the future.

She has had a varied career including corporate showbands, chorister, keyboardist, dancer, actor and cabaret entertainer.  Her credits include playing the role of Kim in Cameron Macintosh’s Australian Production of the musical Miss Saigon, as well as her critically acclaimed performance as Mary Magdalene in the 2013 Australian Premiere of the musical ‘The Way of the Cross’.  This musical is currently in rehearsal for a 2014 season on April 3rd, 4th & 5th, so try to get to see it if you can.

In her ‘other life’ Jennifer Trijo is a music teacher at Mercedes College and, in fact, Harry Baulderstone and Lincoln Bennet are past Mercedes students and Azriel Poskey-Miles is a current Year 10 music student.  Their professional performances reflect not only their talents, but Jennifer’s inspired teaching skills.

Lincoln Bennett and Harry Baulderstone, have now formed a duo called The Pin Ups, and are available for hire. If you would like to get in touch with them about performing at your event contact them on thepinupsofficial@hotmail.com

Jennifer herself is also available for events, both as a solo entertainer and with an accompanying band, as well as for lessons in singing, piano, acoustic guitar and song writing. She also has a CD of her original songs ‘Keys to a Woman’s Heart’ for sale.
