REVIEW: PO PO MO CO (Comedy / Cabaret)

This riotous adults-only cabaret was skilfully presented by five-piece Melbourne comedy troupe, Post Post Modern Comedy (PO PO MO CO). Recently granted the Adelaide Fringe Emerging Artist Award, these performers live up to the hype and give The Rocky Horror Show a run for its money.

The moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by friendly and sassy hostess, Nurse Regina. She handed me a lollipop and fluttered her lashes. What followed was a hilarious adaptation of Transylvanian tales that had me belly laughing across the hour.

Boundaries were pushed and political-correctness annihilated as the characters playfully parodied archetypes of vampires, witches, masters, serfs, and repulsive villagers. The sexual references were plentiful but delivered in such a silly way that one would have to have no sense of humour to take offense to it.

The performers were extremely comical and committed to their craft. They read the audience well and their interaction was sensational, ultimately lifting my overall enjoyment of the show.

Their strengths were in their ability to entertain their audience through frivolity and “cheekiness” through a fitting script. The highlight of the show was the character NOSFER-ARSE-TU who received a lot of stage time in several guises.

You have never seen a vampire tale told like this, and if you are a fan of camp comedy you don’t want to miss a chance to see these clever creatives while they’re in town.
