REVIEW: NOUGHTY GIRLS (Sketch Comedy)

When I attend a comedy show at the Fringe, I cross my fingers that the performer is going to make me laugh out loud. It can be hit and miss and at times punters are left underwhelmed. This was not the case with Noughty Girls.

Hannah, Courtney, and Kim are the kind of ladies you’d want to be friends with. Their off-stage personas were just as vibrant as they welcomed you into the venue with big smiles on their faces.

The creative team at The General Public travelled to Adelaide to bring this hilarious cracker of a show to The Producers Hotel.

They describe themselves on their site as “an independent female creative company based in Sydney comprising of a group of piss-takers, performance-makers and potato-bakers.”

Though I didn’t get to sample their baking skills, I was transported back to my teenage years through pop culture references to MySpace, mix tapes, Britney Spears, and Dolly magazine (which this critic actually read in the days when Miranda Kerr wasn’t a household name).

Witty one-liners such as “I’m removing you from my Top Friends and replacing you with Tom” had me in fits of laughter.

The sketches were tied together by an impending ten year high school reunion the noughty girls were reluctant to attend.

They recited their letters to Dolly Doctor, a teenage advice column, and the doctor’s responses became more eccentric as the show progressed.

Parodies of gluten-free diets and brazilian waxing, and an impressive impersonation of Kath and Kim also featured.

The audience was entertained by their intense gazes, Destiny’s Child-esque swagger, and dynamic stage presence.

Despite many female-specific references, I heard a gentleman in the room chortle more than once. The group of ladies on the couch beside me were in hysterics and even the chatter in the ladies room following the show was positive.

This was a thoroughly entertaining Fringe show. A combination of excellent writing, high-energy dancing, sensational comic timing, and fairy-floss pink tracksuits makes this show a great night out.
